EcoClipper, an emission-free cargo company, has set sail for the first time.

EcoClipper is a sustainable shipping company launched in 2018 that uses sailing cargo ships in order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions from ocean transport.

Using De Tukker, a retrofitted sailing ship built in 1912, EcoClipper is sending its first shipment from Amsterdam to Porto.

De Tukker is capable of carrying 12 people and 50-70 tons of cargo. For the maiden voyage, the ship will carry a crew of 10 and a cargo of Dutch chocolates.

"After a year-long period of expert refitting by our own refit crew and the crew of the Talsma shipyard, it was with the greatest pleasure that I watched De Tukker sail off towards the horizon. This is the next step in returning to large scale transport by sailing vessel at sea." said Jorne Langelaan, founder and CEO of EcoClipper.

EcoClipper plans on producing their own cargo ships called the EcoClipper500 to go along with retrofitted ships. The EcoClipper500 will be able to carry up to 48 people and 500 tons of cargo.

De Tukker will ship to several ports across North and West Europe including major ports in Amsterdam, Porto, and London. EcoClipper is open to expanding the route in the future.

De Tukker is currently crossing the Bay of Biscay and is expected to arrive in Porto on May 13.
