Federated Wireless held live demonstrations of a prototype 5G wireless network exclusive to the Department of Defense in support of the agency's smart warehousing plan for the U.S. Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia.

The technology uses Internet of Things applications to automate the facility, including real-time robotics, smart security cameras and IoT-enabled equipment, the company said Tuesday.

Federated Wireless is the lead contractor for the 5G Smart Warehouse Initiative, which also involves Cisco, JMA Resources and KPMG. The program is a stepping stone toward the modernization of DOD facilities, in part through low-latency, gigabit-speed connectivity.

"Our demonstration of these innovative 5G applications and use cases proves the art of the possible and marks a huge leap forward for defense logistics and, ultimately warfighter readiness," said Kurt Schaubach, chief technology officer of Federated Wireless. "[The collaboration looks] to extend the power of edge computing and private 5G to telehealth, training, facilities security, supply chain optimization, and other mission-critical operations."

The private 5G smart warehouse network will officially be deployed at MCLBA in July 2023.
